Engine Cooling R & D
The Fans Division of Phillips and Temro Industries produces Truflo engine cooling fans in its manufacturing facility based in Tipton, UK with sales and distribution located in Europe, North America and Asia. The Fans Division Truflo factory is the world’s largest manufacturer of steel fans and is the innovation leader in the development of composite construction fans, incorporating plastics and aluminum.
Truflo has been providing fan solutions to the diesel powered construction and power generation industries for over 50 years. Through these years of experience we have gained a progressive understanding of our customers’ needs. Truflo fans meet performance and noise requirements and provide great value and durability at the same time. In any fan application, there is an optimum solution and we are dedicated to supplying it.
We strive to understand our customers’ cooling needs, and we answer those needs with suitable, cost-effective fan solutions. Our sales people and engineers work closely with our customers to find the best design for the application. We test our fans’ performance under realistic conditions so they can be relied upon for “real-world” use. Our innovative new product development team, and our investments in extensive R&D and testing facilities, all ensure that our fans are the best choice for your requirements.
Truflo has a wind tunnel based on ISO5801 (AMCA 210) which is capable of testing fans up to 2130 mm (84”) diameter. Noise is measured to determine the most appropriate fan diameter and most effective fan geometry in order to achieve performance goals. We work in collaboration with our customers to offer a systems approach that includes, not just the fan as a single component, but as an integral part of the total system: fan, shroud and radiator. This helps ensure that products are optimally installed, which delivers the best results for cooling and noise reduction.

We offer exceptional engineering and technical support to our customers. From concept to production, product engineering is at the forefront of what we do. We can make proposals, provide CAD models and manufacture samples, and when required, do performance testing within a short time-frame to meet customers’ needs.
Our modal analysis capability enables us to screen potential fan solutions for application, ensuring that the proposed solution will be structurally suitable. Where required an “in machine” strain test enables us to determine how the fan is influenced by the environment in which it is operating. Strain gauges on the fan structure enable the effect of complex aerodynamic and engine induced sources of excitation to be determined. Components can be tested to destruction on a shaker table to discover any design weaknesses and to generate fatigue data relating to products as they are actually constructed: this is far more reliable than using text book data for materials under artificial conditions. With years of experience in this kind of test work, Truflo is uniquely placed to offer cost effective products which meet and often exceed customers’ expectations.

Our long history in metal fan cooling technology induced Truflo engineering to develop plastic fans which are also highly suitable for engine cooling applications. Three years ago, a series of single piece, molded fans was introduced and plans are underway to extend the range to 60 inches by virtue of a steel/plastic hybrid design. Fans can be supplied for mounting to an engine or provided with an adaptor to suit the shaft of a hydraulic motor.

Recent developments in metal fans include the option of sickle shaped blades. These typically reduce noise by 3 dBA in real installations as well as in wind tunnel tests.

Manufacturing at Truflo has advanced over the past few years with increased used of laser cutters, CNC machinery together with a lean manufacturing environment and associated improved lead-times.
